We just recently finished up the week-long festivities here
for the Feria de Abril or Feria de Sevilla.
It was really cool! For this
celebration, many ladies dress in the traje de flamenca/traje de gitana (flamenco
dress), and gentleman generally dress in nice slacks and a jacket. Those not wearing the traditional dress are
dressed up in their wedding-best.

I absolutely loved seeing all the flamenco dresses, jewelry,
flowers in the hair, fans, shoes, and everything! The horses were even dressed up!
So what goes on at this fair?
Well, there are lots and lots of private casetas (tents)
that are rented out by organizations or families, and if you are a member, you
can go in, eat, drink, dance the Sevillana or Flamenco on the dance floor, and
relax with the typical drink – 7-up mixed with Manzanilla wine. There are a few public casetas as well, but
not many. Aside from relaxing in the
casetas, you can ride in a carriage, walk around, or visit the carnival area where
there are rides and games. There are also a few bull fights in the arena during this week, but I didn't go.

I went to Feria 2 times, once with the teachers from the school where I work, and another time with some American and Spanish friends. Both times, I was lucky enough to be with people who were members of different organizations and could get us into the private tents. I enjoyed both occasions and am so glad I got to go! It was hot but it was lovely!
