That one time half my face was paralyzed...

So, if you also keep up with me on Facebook, you probably already know, but I thought I’d give ya’ll a little update on what I’ve been facing lately.  Unfortunately, I seem to have come down with a case of Bell’s Palsy, which basically means that the muscles on half of my face are not working.  For me, the left side of my face is immobile.

Me, smiling... for real.
It all started last Sunday night, when my face felt funny and the left half of my lips was feeling odd and tingly.  As I Skyped with my parents that night, I told my dad (a doctor) what was going on and he gave me the lowdown on what could possibly be happening.  One of the things he explained was that I could be coming down with Bell’s Palsy… awesome.

The next morning, the whole left side of my face was completely immobile.  It was difficult to speak and I couldn’t really blink my left eye.  I also had a terrible headache.  I didn’t go to work (could you imagine standing in front of a bunch of 10 year-olds looking like Two-Face from Batman, trying to teach a serious lesson?  Yeah, I couldn’t either…)  and was able to visit a Chiropractor that day.  The adjustment really helped my headache!  Since then, I’ve just been waiting to see if the problem would go away on its own.

It is now Saturday afternoon and I’m, unfortunately, still not healed.  Yesterday, I had another appointment with the Chiropractor and I also went to a private clinic for a corticosteroid prescription.   I’m on day 2 of steroids and hoping that this treatment will really kick this thing in the butt.

For now, I’m just resting and trying to keep my left eye moist since I can’t really shut it very well.  Apparently, one of the biggest risks with Bell’s Palsy is eye damage.  Sweet.

According to the doctors and what I’ve read, this could last a few days (well, so much for that), a few weeks, or even a few months!  I’m really hoping and praying that it heals soon (and completely), especially since I’m due to go to Paris this Friday!  So, for all of my Christian brothers and sisters out there, I would really appreciate your prayers for my health!

Thanks in advance!

Have any of you ever had this problem?

Until next time!

  1. It’s not an easy journey, but with your high spirit, you’ll definitely overcome this soon. Anyway, I heard a lot about chiropractic therapy and its good result. I hope it works out well for you. I read your recent post by the way, and I’m happy to know that you’re getting better. I wish for your continuous recovery!

    1. Thanks so much for the compliment and well wishes! Chiropractic helped a lot... and I'm lucky enough that my dad is a Chiropractor so he was a great help when I went home. :) My face keeps coming back to life and I know it will be all better soon. Thanks for keeping up with my story! :)

  2. It's good to know that chiropractic has helped a lot in your recovery. There are times when you have to rest and enjoy the hormonal balance that the practice provides you. At the same time, regularly visiting a PT can be very beneficial to your health. You can prevent serious physical injuries if you follow their exercise tips. By the way, when your body has balanced hormones and normal body processes, there is a tendency that the injury will heal itself. :)
